CLEARLY EYEWARE WINS BEST RETAIL EXPERIENCE AT THE SYDNEY DESIGN AWARDS

Clearly is the world’s largest online retailer of glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses.

Eyewear shopping has historically been a very medical based shopping experience. But our consumer insights research identified that shoppers regard their eyes as one of the most valuable pieces of ‘real estate’ when it comes to defining their fashion style.

With Clearly's first physical store in the southern hemisphere, we were challenged to convert the retail experience from a 'medical' experience to a fun, 'fashion' based experience. Located in the 'Ivy' complex in the Sydney CBD, we were further challenged to create a retail experience that would appeal to both day time office workers and night time revellers.

Using visual merchandising in the form a 2.5m metre high rotating mirror ball, a night lights display visible from George Street, a custom scent, and specially commissioned music, the Clearly store has transformed the eyewear shopping experience into a joy.

The store has has achieved great media coverage, incredibly positive consumer feedback, and regularly draws crowds of people to the windows who are eager to watch the spectacular night time sound and lights show.

AUSTRALIAN DESIGN REVIEW

KFC FAST CASUAL RESTAURANT HAS DESIGNS ON A NEW CONSUMER BASE

In Counter culture: fast food’s slow evolutionADR examined the recent trend of fast food giants trying to extend brand identities through the path of differently considered and alternative interior design.

McDonald’s had just completed its creation of The Corner store in Sydney’s Camperdown: a thinly veiled attempt to try out a different type of McDonald’s menu and attract a different type of customer.

KFC jumped on board with sketches for its ‘fast-casual’ restaurant, still within the model of a traditional fast food design template, but evolving KFC from its crassly lit white walls and bulky red seats to something more bespoke and interesting.

Designed by The Great Indoors and Designworks, the KFC fast-casual restaurant in Parramatta has now been finished and photos of the completed restaurant reveal little deviation from the artist’s impressions. A layered, light wood interior is broken up by panels in KFC red, and a more youth-oriented typeface plastering evocative phrases like, ‘it’s oh so good’ across the walls.

The Australian design community may baulk at KFC and McDonald’s superficial makeovers, but this may perhaps serve as a wake-up call for a kind of stylistic complacency that has pervaded local hospitality design of late.

With a swathe of casual dining restaurants in Australia adhering to a similar stripped-back industrial design aesthetic, many elements are so easily replicated. Looking at the tiles spanning the counter and exterior façade, the pine panelling and the use of a bright accent colour, the new restaurant could be mistaken for a restaurant with a more credible foodie offering.

It will be interesting to note how the updated design will drive consumer engagement for KFC, in a new direction that is shaping the future for major fast food corporations.

NEW KFC CONCEPT STORE OPENS IN SYDNEY’S PARRAMATTA

KFC gets a hipster makeover in Parramatta

WOULD you like quinoa salad with that?

Colonel Sanders has had a hipster makeover in Parramatta, with a new KFC concept store opening today at 11am.

More like an upmarket cafe than a fast food joint, the new store is positioned to compete with archrival McDonald’s experimental restaurant, The Corner, and other middle-market food chains such as Mad Mex, Grill’d and Guzman y Gomez.

BID TO SERVE BEER AND CIDER WITH FRIED CHICKEN

The first of its kind in Australia, the new Kentucky Fried Chicken concept store in Church St is markedly different.

Designed by award-winning architects The Great Indoors, a black and white exterior has replaced the usual red, and inside, stylish lighting, timber furniture and exposed ceiling beams give it a modern, casual feel.

The store aims to tap into the 25 and over age bracket and KFC Australia spokeswoman Nikki Lawson said Parramatta was the perfect testing ground for the new concept.

“What Parramatta has done around this dining precinct is amazing,” Ms Lawson said.

“I’m not surprised everyone is fighting to get on this street.

“This is testing if KFC can work in an urban environment where there is not room for a big drive through store.”

OFFICEWORKS 3D EXPERIENCE

The Great Indoors and Designworks have collaborated with Officeworks to create a retail journey that allows people to discover and learn the new limits of what’s possible in 3D printing.

The Officeworks 3D Experience Centre, located at Russell Street store in Melbourne, is the first of its kind for any major retailer in Australia.

The experience includes a one-of-a-kind Mini Me photo booth which scans and prints people into lifelike figures; 3D models; 3D printer hardware and consumables; and 3D scanning, which allows people to bring in their favourite objects and have them scanned and 3D printed in material, colour and size of their choice; while standard print and copy services along with Kodak Picture Kiosks are also available.

3D printing has been successful in retail markets internationally.
